I'm having this issue too. I tried using the apm command in CMD.exe and its saying the package isn't found:

`C:\Users\ah0133100>apm install data-atom Installing data-atom to C:\Users\ah0133100.atom\packages failed Failed to install data-atom because Git was not found.

The data-atom package has module dependencies that cannot be installed without Git.

You need to install Git and add it to your path environment variable in order to install this package.

You can install Git by downloading, installing, and launching GitHub for Windows: https://windows.github.com

Run apm -v after installing Git to see what version has been detected.`

I was facing some issues even after installing GitHub for Windows, so I installed Git from here

It's still not working for me. I downloaded GitHub for MacOs but I still have the same issue.

I searched a lot about this issue(because I was also facing it) and found that it occurred because of not having Git installed on my PC. you can try installing Git from here and then reinstalling data-atom package from Atom editor.

@thereisanissue1, Git and github are different things. Try installing Git on your pc from the link provided above.

You will need to do not just GitHub but "GIT" is a stand alone that once installed close atom and then reopen it to install the package and that should do the trick. It just worked for me. :)
