Override definition values

Hi,

We upgrade from 6 to 9 and had a question about the create method. In 6 we were able to overwrite dimensions for example when we called render.

But I can't seem to find a way to do this in 9. The situation is that we provide a sensible default to our consumers, but they should be able to overwrite some properties like dimensions.

Any hints or tips I could get to accomplish this?
