I can't make a new song at all :(

What steps will reproduce the problem?

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I'm following the steps perfectly, and each time I press play, it just stays 
silent and the cursor goes to 'LEN'.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.5.4, windows 98

Which steps are you following? Also, if you load some example song, can you 
play those?
