Fraidyc.at/s/ stops updating.

Open kickscondor opened this issue 6 years ago • 15 comments

After running Fraidycat over many nights, the messaging between the background window and the single-page app failed. The data in the background window is up-to-date - but the single-page app shows stale data from the night before. It doesn't fix itself if I leave it there after the PC is awake again. If I refresh the page, it corrects itself. I don't know if it's disconnecting or what. Perhaps I need to periodically recheck tabs to be sure they are connected.

I'm having less of a problem with this in 1.1.3 - need to keep testing.

I'm seeing similar behavior (sites not updating) under Fraidycat 1.1.2 on one machine (15" MacBook Pro, Firefox 74.0, macOS 10.15.3) while another machine (13" MacBook Pro, same browser & OS) works without issue.

A Refresh or Shift + Refresh doesn't seem to clear the issue on the affected machine. Neither does restarting Firefox and trying the whole Refresh then Shift + Refresh mambo.

Ok - I've solved a bug with this in 1.1.3. (See the force update argument added in 3091bac.) Going to leave this in 1.1.4 so I can continue to monitor this.

I too keep running into this using fraidycat 1.1.5 on Firefox 76.0.1 on macOS. Like once a week or so everything stops updating.

The only workaround I've found that works is to bring up inspector for the extension, go to the network tab a disable caching, then refresh a few times. That usually gets things working again.

When this happens, in the console tab I see a lot of these exceptions:

Unchecked lastError value: Error: Could not establish connection. Receiving end does not exist.

Couldn't get the disable caching trick to work with fraidycat 1.1.5 on Firefox 76.0.1 on Arch

Apologies for my silence - I am doing testing in Firefox to track this down and cannot say yet if I have nabbed this. Your comments have been helpful!

I have the same issue running "ungoogled chromium" as my browser. I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking at for debugging. Not much going on in the console or network tab. I started recording background sync and fetch in the devtools but, after a few minutes, nothing's happened.

@jeromegn Ok I've installed ungoogled chromium - however it won't let me install Fraidycat from the Web Store. Do you normally install from the zip file?

medicinecal avatar Aug 12 '20 17:08 medicinecal

@medicinecal either from a zip file or from a folder (by enabling developer mode in the extensions settings) or by using https://github.com/NeverDecaf/chromium-web-store to install extensions from the chrome web store.

Not sure if anything changed, but this seems to work now under ungoogled chromium.

Still happens for me on Firefox 79 on macOS.

My Fraidycat stopped updating 6 days ago. Firefox 79, Fraidycat 1.1.6. I didn't do any upgrades or changed anything if I remember correctly. Maybe there was some background upgrade. I see no errors on console nor any network calls (I'm not sure I should see any), except favicon fetches.

Thank you for this amazing program!

@fiatjaf Restarting your browser does nothing? (I realize this is not ideal - just trying to shake you out of the stalling and diagnose the issue.)

medicinecal avatar Sep 24 '20 15:09 medicinecal

Indeed it did. I thought I had restarted it during these last 6 days but it turns out I hadn't, as restarting now worked!

That's a good enough solution for me.

@fiatjaf We have some fixes in the latest release that should alleviate this - but it's hard to say without seeing your complete list of follows.
