I have similar problem with Ice not remembering which section of menu the icon was; after specific program restarts Ice is putting it icon into hidden section, even during the previous session I put it into always visible;
I have also similar problems with Ice, not remembering that I've placed icons (e.g. 1Password) in the visible section. It keeps placing them into the hidden section. I've already disabled the section 'always-hidden' section to reduce problem, but they still persist.
I have this same issue and it's always 1Password that moves from "Hidden" to "Always-Hidden" after a restart.
Yes, for me it is the DEVONThink that goes hidden.
Same issue with 1Password
This isn't a bug with Ice, but I'll keep it open to avoid more duplicates (there have already been many). See #298 for more details.
I should note that this doesn't just happen on restart, but rather whenever a new app is added to the menu bar. Some menu bar items are seen as new, regardless of whether they have been previously managed by Ice, and so macOS adds them to the end of the menu bar (more info on that in the linked issue).
Thank you for pointing this out and explaining. When can we expect the next version that will resolve this? (#26)
@1010justauser1010 I'm not entirely sure. I've had some personal things come up recently, so development has slowed quite a bit. My current focus is getting the next major release (0.11.0) out before macOS 15 is officially released, as the current version has some UI issues with the new OS.
Same issue here as well in macOS Sequoia. It is really annoying to open the menubar settings and drag from always hidden section.
@sumitsahoo I had another report of an app that was previously working fine misbehaving on Sequoia. I'm guessing there's some underlying change Apple made that's causing this, so there may be multiple new instances of this happening.
For me only a few apps fall to always hidden without any input or consent from me. I have to open ICE to pull it out of the always hidden settings. I currently am using the Ice bar/overflow bar.
If there's anything I can do to help debug or replicate. Let me know. Dropbox and Adobe are the repeat culprits. They also can update and restart themselves in the background, etc.
Apple M1, Sequoia 15.0 (also happened in previous OS weeks ago) Ice v0.10.5
After Ice being open for a few moments while typing this. I was prompted that there was an update to 0.11.3. I have checked for updates several times without any result. I didn't think to even check the most recent version number.
Update: 0.11.4 shortly after. But now Always Hidden Section says "Unable to display menu bar items" and I cannot place one in there.
Happens to 1Password icon everytime.
Happens to xbar icons too

Yes I get this with 1Password as well, it moved from Visible to Always Hidden section. I just tried a restart of Ice and that did not cause the issue, it seems to be on reboot.
I think it's more a restart of the non-Ice app, or it removing and re-adding its menu bar icons which Ice then forgets.
Of course, that does happen at reboot but it might also happen relaunching 1Password, or for me with xbar it happens with "Refresh All".
Just confirming that @gingerbeardman is correct, it is on restarting of 1Password.
Truth be told, until custom profiles are introduced (like Bartender has), this app will always remain a semi-usable thing. Newly opened apps will always go under hidden, and no custom ordering of icons will work 100% all of the time.

I didn't have this issue with Bartender. Was that specifically because of the custom profiles? It might be worth switching back until that features is implemented in Ice.
@jordanbaird is there a way to be notified when the feature has been added?
@troyyyyyyyyyyyyy There isn't. You'll just have to keep an eye on the repository. The release notes will include the feature when it is added.
I have this issue with one specific app. The app is NepTunes and is used to scrobble to last.fm. It has an option to show the current song playing on the menu bar.
This menu item always moves back to hidden after each time I move it.
Just a +1.
This has been happening for many releases now, I keep hoping to find it fixed. :-) But still there in 0.11.12 on a MacBookPro running up to date Sonoma.
Apps that often slip from "always visible" to "always hidden" are 1password and Outlook. I have no idea what causes it to happen, but - may be relevant - I have 3 monitors and often disable one of them when attaching it to a separate (Mac Studio, Sequoia) system. I use Ice on both Macs, but on the studio I see it happen most often with 1password, zoom and the Studio display menu control.
I have no idea what causes it to happen
Reason is when an app refreshes its icon it is considered new and goes to the left end of the list
General --> Advanced --> Enable Always Hidden (uncheck)
Not a perfect solution, but this accomplishes what I thought it would. I can at least get to those after restarts. Time will tell.

Ah, most likely. 1Password's icon refreshes when it locks or unlocks. I guess Outlook does too based on the status of unread emails (edit: actually it changes on status changes according to scheduled meetings in the calendar). Makes sense.
I will disable hidden items for now, although I'd love to see the configurable "show on icon changes" feature that Bartender4 used to have.
the same problem in https://github.com/ddddxxx/LyricsX
Having the same problem with Doll
Running into this with Timery
Ice doesn't "remember" the Menu Bar Layout after a macOS reboot. It usually remember a couple apps, but most apps end up back in the Visible Section. I am not using "always-hidden", just Visible and Hidden.
Ice 0.11.12 on macOS Sequoia 15.3.1 (24D70). This behavior was present on 15.3 as well.
