Find a way of updating without overwriting layout edits

If I release a new update, it will overwrite user edits on /layouts/. One thing I could do is to rename the directory, but I need a better solution as I'm not renaming it for every new release. Maybe check if the directory exists before update and rename it to /..._backup/?
