rmarkdown reference highlighting

For those who write manuscripts in rmarkdown (and who are more productive working in a pink environment) it would be handy to have highlighting for references. E.g. something like this:

.ace_list, .ace_markup.ace_list { /* markdown references */
  color: #b99fe3;
  text-shadow: 0 0 2px #000, 0 0 10px #cfbbf0, 0 0 5px #7c59b5, 0 0 25px #27055e;
}
