add a LICENSE file to the repository

Would it be possible to add a license (ideally something like BSD or MIT) to the repository?

Hi @jeanphix -- would you be open to doing this? I have a fork I'd like to add a license to as well, for my edits, & would like to use the same one if possible (I'm leaning towards MIT). Thanks!
