Clarification on git-based vs api-driven?

Hello! I was wondering what the differentiator exactly is for considering a CMS api-driven or git-based? I am wondering, because Statamic is also considered a git-based CMS, so I am not sure what this exactly means.

When is a CMS considered git-based and when is it considered api-driven? Is it just a synonym for "file-based"?
