What happened

Inpainting produces blurry undetailed results. Models used SDXL Base and Flux.1 dev. Could this be due to downscaling from "scale before processing"?

This is a result of interpolation. You are generating a 1024x1024 image and then scaling it down to fit inside of a 208x208 box, so every 4.9x4.9 pixel area in the generated image becomes one pixel in the bounding box output.

You can counteract it in a few ways:

  1. Turn off auto scaling (not advisable when your bbox is this small, but sometimes helpful)
  2. Scale up your canvas so that you can inpaint at native 1024x1024 or higher and avoid the downscales
  3. Inpaint the whole face instead of just an eye so that it all matches
  4. Right click the raster layer and Add Adjustments to increase the sharpness of the result
