What should this feature add?
I would like to be able to save my whole project in its current state for reloading later. Its great that the app state resumes upon restart, but its difficult to work on multiple images back to back and have to recreate all the settings.

I would also like this - similar to how PS handles it would be nice, a separate file that you can load back and everything is the same. Even if it was a JSON file or something "simple" like that.
When you save an image to the gallery, the majority of the metadata (including layers) is stored in the image. You can right click, recall metadata > all, to load it back up.
