Make the project at least usable

The Makefile has been incorrect since at least 2017 (#1) and has gone unfixed.

Additionally, the install file gives a command that fails (it doesn't include the -i flag), so I'm copying the command from the readme.

Even if this project is essentially dead, this PR will at least make it buildable and usable as-is.
