CentOS + qemu just wont boot

It hard-reboots after "assign heap", no matter what compiler is used to build the OS.

One thing of particular note is that the QEMU version is really really old.

QEMU emulator version 1.5.3 (qemu-kvm-1.5.3-156.el7_5.2)

I tried installing a newer qemu but the package system broke.

can you try building QEMU from source?
