change color for grey, unused spots

It would be interesting for visualization purposes to have the unused spots (default grey) in other colors. In my case, the coloring of the rows makes these hard to notice. Couldn't find a way so far of getting this sorted. Below is how my plot looks now. Yellow-colored rows as you can see make the grey dots hard to see. Any suggestions to go around this?
