311Data Workshop Slides
Dependency
~#109~
Overview
In order to effectively deliver a workshop, we will need to create a presentation that will outline the use of features within the 311data.org tool.
Action Items
- [ ] Brainstorm and align on the "story" or "theme" that we will use throughout the workshop
- [ ] Develop the motivation or the "why" behind the workshop
- [ ] #109 Create slides that walk through identifying NC + CC by address, explain CC relevance
Resources/Instructions
- Things we've aligned on: graffiti will be the "theme" for the workshop and we will focus on South Central as the neighborhood
- Draft of Slides
@MalakH21 can you add more context to this issue.
@mcmorgan27 @MalakH21 Please add update using this template
Progress: "What is the current status of your project? What have you completed and what is left to do?" Blockers: "Difficulties or errors encountered." Availability: "How much time will you have this week to work on this issue?" ETA: "When do you expect this issue to be completed?" Pictures: "Add any pictures of the visual changes made to the site so far."
If you need help, be sure to either:
- ask for help at your next meeting
- put a "Status: Help Wanted" label on your issue and pull request
- put up a request for assistance on the #access-the-data channel.
@MalakH21 to own 5,6,8 @mcmorgan27 to own 4 & 1 analysis slide @ShikaZzz to own motivating deeper analysis

Slide Draft
broken down by the agenda (in rough order) :
- [introduction] intro + motivating data proficiency
- [tools to cover] part 1: map + data visualization (heavier focus on data visualization)
- aim for 2 - 3 examples targeting different users
- [tools to cover] part 2: neighborhood comparison (maybe report/alpha tool)
- aim for 2 - 3 examples targeting different users (building on examples from part 1)
- activities - brief exercises putting the learnings of the workshop to practice + debrief
- analytical concepts
- guiding story, research, data visualizations (all the data exploration work)
- feel free to add more that's deemed relevant

sarah is breaking this issue down into multiple issues
Here’s the general flow
-
Start by identifying relevant NCs + CCs
-
[ ] Create slides that walk through identifying NC + CC by address, explain CC relevance
-
Assume that there is no NC/CC issue (or issue linked to a request type “definitionally” - e.g. there area at the top of the mind of the user
-
With this assumption, guide the user through three primary visualizations (Time to Close, Frequency, Request Volume) under the 311 “Data Visualization” feature, explain how the information in the visualization may indicate relevant issues in the user’s NC to explore + more tools in the 311 ecosystem (Alpha, Map, etc.)
-
For example, SSL requests 50% longer to close than any request type, Is this the same in the neighboring NC? -> Comparison
-
[ ] Create slides that explain the potential issues / investigations to be done from Time to Close, Frequency, Request Volume visualizations + potential explorations linking to other tools #109
-
Go over Graffiti as a pertinent example to South Central NC, "sort - of" conclusion to first exercise
-
Include the analysis that leads to South Central as highest contributor/largest volume of GFT
-
[ ] Create slides that contain above explained Graffiti content
^ broke up into 2 separate issues for now - will add more later once the details are more fleshed out
