Wifi adapter pass thru
I originally tried monitoring my 22kW generator using a PI 3B with a hat that plugged into the port and provided a 4 pin connectiom to the the wifi adapter. This let me monitor with Genmon and also have the Generac app see info from the Cloud services.
Alas the PI device is didn't survive the elements and I signed up for my local electric company's VPP test program so I needed to keep the wifi in place.
That has ended so I am looking at this solution again. Has anyone determined how to wire this up so that the stock wifi adapter can still be used?
I'm also interested to know the answer to this.. it'd certainly be ideal! I don't want my support vendor to lose the ability to see my generator information... if I can avoid it.
Yes, apparently it is possible on an Evolution 2 controller if the wifi module uses different pins on 8-pin molex connector, although I haven't done it myself. See the discussion and linked thread toward the bottom of this page. If you're looking for a ready-to-go solution, PintSize.Me has custom kits designed for genmon, with an optional splitter module that lets you just plug both of them in.
Reading the description on that last link, it sounds like some of the mobile link wifi adapters might use rs232 and therefore not work with a normal genmon rs232 adapter. In that case, it might be possible to use a rs485 adapter for genmon and let the wifi adapter use rs232, but that's just gueswork.
