as mentioned in my comment here i cannot reproduce this.

Can you provide more details, explaining what Kobo you have, and if your books are in KEPUB or EPUB format?

From my tests, you need a KEPUB for annotations to work in the first place, and the Kobo does not send annotations to the sync server at all, at least from what i observed from the traffic coming into Komga from the Kobo.

tested this again today on my Kobo Nia:

  • with a KEPUB:
    • when selecting text, 2 options appear: Highlight and Add Note
    • after highlighting or adding a note, the text will show specific highlight. Annotations can be seen in the annotations section of the book.
  • with an EPUB:
    • when selecting text, 2 options appear: Highlight and Add Note
    • after highlighting the text does not show specific highlight
    • after adding a note, a popup will show "Note saved successfully". Text does not show specific highlight.
    • nothing is shown in annotations section of the book.

I still haven't tried to test this for great if losing my user's annotations.

But here is our set up. No kobo store user account created. My understanding is that annotations are created, but then are destroyed on the next sync.
