Feature Request: reference current branch in markdown

Motivation

GitHub is the heart of my projects - open source and commercial. It's a source of information for millions of developers. Concequently, a small paper cut cuts many fingers. Everytime that a branch is hardcoded into a README to make links work in a PR, that link needs to be updated once the PR is merged. This creates many extra PRs and lots of broken links.

This was previously raised in https://github.com/github/markup/issues/913. It was closed not on it's merrits but because people came to express their need for this feature with "+1" comments.

Request

Please add a way to reference current branch in Markdown that's portable across branches.
