Feature Request: Allow selecting Copilot Chat response language
Expected Behavior
- In GitHub Copilot for Xcode settings, a “Response Language” option appears
- Once “Japanese” (or any other language) is selected, all subsequent chat responses are in that language
Current Behavior
- There is no language setting; Copilot Chat always responds in English
- System language settings have no effect
Version Info
- GitHub Copilot for Xcode: 0.34.116
- Xcode: 16.3
- macOS: 15.4.1
Motivation
I currently prepend every prompt with “Please answer in Japanese,” which is cumbersome. VS Code’s Copilot Chat already offers a Locale preference. Please add the same convenience to the Xcode extension.

@usami-k thank you for reaching out. This feature request has been on our radar, stay tuned.
Hi community,
Personally, it would be nice if added system prompt setting feature in Settings. It would be more flexible to manage output as per our individual usecase. Please consider to enhance this feature request for more compatibility for any situation.
The latest Pre-release 0.35.120 supports two ways for custom prompt:
- A new setting for custom response language
- Automactially pick up custom instruction from
.github/copilot-instructions.mdof your current workspace
Thank you for addressing this request. I’ve been using version 0.36 for a while, and I can confirm that Copilot Chat now responds in the specified language as expected. I really appreciate your work on this. I’ll close this issue.
