In WSL throws an error with xsel

Under WSL extension first requested installation of xsel. I did, but now it's failing with error message xsel: Can't open display: (null) : Inappropriate ioctl for device.

I understand that this is somehow related with display setup but totally lost at this point. Some googling suggested that I can use clip.exe as a replacement under WSL, however the extension does not seem to provide a way to configure binary to use for copying.

This also doesn't seem to work with remote dev, at least on macos.
