Colors are washed out on android TV

Open Blackilykat opened this issue 7 months ago • 15 comments

What happened?

When casting to my TV, I notice the colors are washed out. Any bright color on the screen (including the very saturated blue sky in some games) merges into a uniform white, colors are darker than they should be and things are generally less distinguishable. When the UI appears the effect temporarily goes away, but then gradually comes back over the span of about one or two seconds after the UI is no longer visible. Keeping the settings popup open does not prevent the effect from going away.

The issue sometimes - seemingly randomly - does not happen. Retrying to cast the same video (with or without restarting the receiver) may give different outcomes.

Replication steps

  1. Start casting from grayjay
  2. Wait like 5 seconds
  3. see the effect

Which TV are you using and on which device is androidTV on?

Zvonimir-FUTO avatar Sep 24 '25 12:09 Zvonimir-FUTO

The TV is a 43PUS8555/12 and it's the device running Android TV

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the issue.

Does it look better if you play media from another source?

infogulch avatar Sep 24 '25 16:09 infogulch

I've experienced this on multiple sources. I'm sure about youtube and nebula, I think twitch as well.

Blackilykat avatar Sep 24 '25 16:09 Blackilykat

I mean from a different input. Does this issue occur with any other video source? Like a Firestick, chromecast, TV antenna, a PC connected via HDMI, etc.

infogulch avatar Sep 24 '25 16:09 infogulch

It only happens in FCast if that's your question. We regularly use this TV with other programs with no issues, including the normal youtube and nebula apps.

OK.

Does your TV have HDR? If so, have you tried adjusting this setting?

infogulch avatar Sep 24 '25 16:09 infogulch

I've looked for it as I also suspected that might be the problem, but found no setting for it. I might have a second look next time I use the TV though, I first checked a few months ago now

Blackilykat avatar Sep 24 '25 16:09 Blackilykat

Just checked again. There's a couple HDR-related settings. One is "HDR upscaling" which was enabled, but "only available to standard sources" which I'm sure FCast isn't. The other was "HDR Plus" which was grayed out and locked into "off". No other HDR settings.

Did you try turning it off to see if it has any effect?

infogulch avatar Sep 24 '25 18:09 infogulch

It does not have any effect.

There was a major update to the Android app that should now be available on the Play store (v2.0.0). Does this issue still exist in the updated version?

Michael-Hollister avatar Oct 09 '25 17:10 Michael-Hollister

The issue still exists, but opening the UI no longer temporarily removes the effect.

Blackilykat avatar Oct 10 '25 14:10 Blackilykat

Okay, thank you for testing it.

In a future update I'll be looking into fixing playback for some of these devices that have these video playback hardware decoding issues. I'll follow up when an update is released or to ask for additional information/help testing if needed.
