Add predominant existing data packaging specifications
In the section describing the relationship to other data packaging specifications, the predominant specifications that are in widespread use in the science community are missing. For an overview of these, see the DataONE Data Packaging description. Here is a list of existing data package specifications that are mature and widely adopted:
- OAI-ORE: Object Reuse and Exchange
- NetCDF: Network Common Data Format - file format spec https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/file_format_specifications.html
- HDF5: Hierarchical Data Format
- BagIt
@mbjones great suggestions. Would you by any chance have a short paragraph description for each which could be included along with the links.
(I should also note, by way of partial explanation, that whilst we were aware of some of these (e.g. HDF and NetCDF) when originally preparing the spec (back in 2007!) we were, at the time, definitely somewhat "biased" towards classic software packaging and that was reflected in the review of other approaches section)
We have introductory paragraphs describing of all of them except HDF in our DataONE Data Packaging documentation. You are welcome to use those with proper attribution to DataONE and/or the specs that we quoted from as appropriate.
I wasn't aware this specification had been around since 2007. Nicely written, btw.
TODO: add this to the appendix - http://dataprotocols.org/data-packages/appendix/
Also add https://researchobject.github.io/specifications/bundle/
FIXED (a while ago I believe).
Reopening as i think this could be useful and should go somewhere specific on the site.
