Thanks @fernandodev - this works surprisingly well! I've observed two things with other solutions:

1. It's a hosted solution, and sooner or later they ask money, show ads, or otherwise change the platform in a way that I wouldn't have chosen it in the first place
2. It's a self hosted solution, but returning to write a new bog after a few months, I find that the software or it's dependents need updates, break compatibility, and the whole thing requires 2x as much energy as writing the blog itself.

So markdown files (using more or less standard syntax) is a good way to ensure that it should just work, and work just as well if I need to move it somewhere else :smile:
