  • @noahtalerman: User requested this because they expect app deployment/patching to be convenient on Windows. They don't want to have to go hunt down the app and manually upload it into their MDM for every new version that comes out.
  • @noahtalerman: Microsoft app store apps other MDMs can integrate w/ Microsoft Store for Business to deliver apps and manage updates. Similar to Apple's Volume Purchasing Programing. Doesn't look like there are Windows apps (outside of Microsoft Store for example Zoom) maintained by the MDM solution that can be easily added and configured to auto-update w/ a simple click in the MDM solution.
    • @marko-lisica: Can you add a paid app from the Microsoft store in Intune? Seems that it’s not possible to add purchased apps - see here
      • @noahtalerman: Do our customers/prospects deploy paid apps? How?

Hey @allenhouchins, when you get the chance can you please help see if this is true?

@noahtalerman - Looks like other MDMs do support Windows app catalogs. Using WS1/Omnissa as an example, admins can upload .exes and have the server handle turning that into a distributable package, they can link to something in the Microsoft store, or they can select a vendor provided/tested package from the "Enterprise App Catalog".

Gong snippet: Skipping this step as the request from the customer was simply to replicate this issue for Windows: https://github.com/fleetdm/fleet/issues/18865.

User story

As an IT admin, I want to select a Fleet-maintained app so that I can install the app on my Windows hosts w/o having to upload a package on my own

Problem

The Fleet plan for an app library will only support macOS on version 1

What have you tried?

Potential solutions

@pintomi1989 @Patagonia121 @phtardif1 @AnthonySnyder8 @ambrusps can you please add Gong snippets for flacourtia, mozartia, pingali, preston, ampella, brashear, and bignonia?

noahtalerman avatar Nov 26 '24 00:11 noahtalerman

Hi @noahtalerman there won’t be specific snippets for this for pingali & mozartia as this is required to provide parity on windows with macOS. This was part of the reason Fleet was chosen for both of these customers. Please let me know if additional customer feedback is needed!

I’ve removed prospect-brasher as it’s no longer applicable there.

FYI @Patagonia121 @zayhanlon @pintomi1989 we shipped our first batch of Windows Fleet-maintained apps in 4.66 (user story here):

  • Box Drive
  • Brave
  • Cloudflare WARP
  • Google Chrome
  • Teamviewer
  • Visual Studio Code

Several more Fleet maintained apps are ~~targeted for 4.68~~ coming soon:

  • 1Password
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Word
  • Excel

Fleet is targeting support for 50 Windows (and 50 macOS) Fleet-maintained apps by the end of Q2. @eugkuo is working on a plan for which apps here.

I don't think we're ready to share this list with ampella, flacourtia, mozartia, pingali, and preston (yet). We will ping you asking for help sharing the list when it's ready.
