Description

When logging in on windows using signInWithEmailAndPassword, some users face the following error: "[firebase_auth/unknown-error] An internal error has occurred."

This only seems to happen on corporate networks, so I imagine it has something to do with their system settings or the network configs, proxies, or certain requests being blocked.

One group of users had the issue on Windows 11 Enterprise, but I was able to run it successfully on the same OS. Another user had it on Windows 10 Pro, so I don't think it has anything to do with the version of windows.

The application does have an internet connection though, which I know because sentry and firestore are able to log these errors without any issues.

Unfortunately the error message is completely useless because it is so vague, and we have now lost 2 bigger customers because of this.

Reproducing the issue

I am not able to reproduce the issue as the common thread seems to be that the users are on corporate networks. I have tried using the same OS as one of the users who faced this error (windows 11 Enterprise), but was able to run it successfully. Firestore also seems to be working.

Here's what I know: Flutter 3.19.1 firebase_core: ^2.29.0 firebase_auth: ^4.19.1

OS is windows (one user on windows 11 enterprise and one on windows 10 pro)

Error occurs when running FirebaseAuth.instance.signInWithEmailAndPassword

I know the code is fine because it works fine for the vast majority of users, and the same users that have the error are able to log on with other devices/networks.

UPDATE: I just got confirmation that it is network related. The same user was able to connect when using a VPN. It is Firebase Auth specific though, because Firestore and Sentry still work as mentioned.

I get the same error, but the network is individual, not corporate. vpn does not help, the application has access to the Internet, other APIs are working fine flutter : 3.16.0, firebase_auth: ^4.19.4 firebase_core: ^2.29.0

Apologies if it wasn't clear from my post, but I am not able to provide a reproducible example as it only happens on certain networks (it was reported by 3 of my customers). There is nothing special about the code, it happens on any call of signInWithEmailAndPassword (and probably any other Firebase Auth network calls).

@alkseiPV is able to reproduce it since it happens on his network.

@Lyokone is there any troubleshooting or log checking/printing @alkseiPV can do to provide more valuable information?

If you can get your hands on macOS and test this would help determine if the issue is with the C++ SDK (windows specific) or a more general issue.

@Lyokone Additionally, one of my customers said their network engineer found the issue, and it was something related to a token related to the following URL being blocked: "securetoken.googleapis.com"

@Lyokone Hi Guillaume, yes, but this appears to be a common issue.

This has already happened with multiple customers, so it seems like something needs to be fixed on the Firebase or FlutterFire side for firebase_auth to be reliable and user friendly on windows. Many users will have this same issue and most will probably not be able to resolve it (usually employees have no control over the network settings and would not be bothered to deal with their IT department).

If this isn't fixed we will most likely have to switch (like @alkseiPV) to something like Supabase or AWS amplify

• The issue is specific to the Windows desktop app and occurs on certain networks.
• Other Firebase services, such as Firestore, work properly in the same environment.
• The web app functions (Auth) without issues in Chrome on same network.
• Identity Toolkit logs do not show any received requests, indicating that the requests are being blocked.
• Both signInWithEmailAndPassword and signInWithCustomToken requests are blocked.

@itsthemanish I understand that everything is working now, but it's not clear that this fixes the issue since the updates don't seem to have any related changes so it could work now due to unrelated network factors.

If you downgrade the packages again, do you still get the "[firebase_auth/unknown-error] An internal error has occurred." on the same network on which you got it before?

Alternatively, @alkseiPV, do you still see this error, and does it work if you upgrade?

The authentication works when the firewall has full internet access. However, with limited access and the following whitelisted URLs: *.googleapis.com *.firebaseio.com *.firebaseapp.com *.gserviceaccount.com *.firebase.com An internal error occurs, displaying the message:

Which it is working on chrome browser in same environment.

We are facing this issue right now, only with certain users.

It is not related to machines, because ir works on users with the same machine settings.

Our app was not even updated and users started facing the issue, that happens with the sign with email and password and send password recover method as well.

We updated the firebase libs to the latest version but it did not work:

The same thing happened here today. The same firestore package versions. They were working fine yesterday, and now they don’t work anymore. Even older builds, with older packages, stopped working on some Windows machines.

We are still experiencing many issues with this.

So far, we have discovered that it is indeed a network blocking issue. There is no outbound connection for Firebase authentication.

We are in Brazil, and this is happening with many internet providers here, such as Vivo, Oi, and Tim.

I was able to reproduce the error on a computer that had never accessed the app before. However, if I connect it to a network that does not have this issue, it works. If I then switch back to the network that was supposed to cause the issue, it also works.

I believe this is similar to a case where someone uses a VPN, then disconnects it, and is able to access normally.

In other words, the first time a user tries to access it, they cannot.

It seems that something is cached or saved in a way that makes this "handshake" possible in subsequent connection attempts.

One thing I noticed was that I was using the macOS initialization configuration for Windows.

When creating a new project from scratch, I saw that when configuring Firebase, it creates a web app to be used on Windows.

How are you configuring yours?

I formatted my computer and was able to reproduce the error. I won’t connect it to a network that I know works because I would lose the chance to run my project under the issue condition.

I will set up the environment to test further.

One thing I haven’t tried yet is creating a new project from scratch with Firebase authentication and attempting to use it. I will do this (and I encourage you to try as well if you have the opportunity, so we can share findings).

In my tests, there doesn’t seem to be an issue overall.

I tested using tracert for the two URLs below:

identitytoolkit.googleapis.com minhas-financas-app.firebaseapp.com The fact is that we did not make any changes on our end. It simply started happening.

Thus, there are two possible causes:

There was a change in the internet providers (but why does it work normally on mobile devices?). There was a change on Google's Firebase team side. If there are any updates, I will share them here.

I'm also from Brazil. Could this recent problem be related to our location? Or maybe to the Windows language??? It started happening to me yesterday.

About the internet provider, I don’t believe that's the issue, because the same application compiled for Flutter Web works fine. In other words, it logs in correctly in the browser but not in the Windows application on the same machine!! I believe it might be a bug in the “firebase_auth” package/plugin for Windows, since the mobile and web versions of this package work fine. I also think it could be some cache storage that interrupts/allows subsequent connections, after a VPN or a good connection.

I’m using the web configuration for Windows too. There is no available configurations for Windows. It has always worked well. Also the flutterfire Authentication plugin is still Beta ("* for development only. Production on Windows is not supported.") 👎

We’ve already created a new and simple project here, but the same errors occur.

I have another Windows machine here that doesn’t work. I won't use a VPN on it. I’ll keep it for testing. If you find anything new, let us know. I’ll do the same.
