Building wheels is slow

The build_wheels.yml workflow that runs during the release process is still too slow. For example, this run took 30 minutes to build the wheels for macOS and 10 minutes to build the wheels for ubuntu. This is okay if the workflow succeeds, but makes debugging the workflow extremely hard if it fails.
