Open ValadAmoleo opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Some info on EA Replay for PSP. The games included are:

  • B.O.B. (Super Nintendo)
  • Budokan: The Martial Spirit (Mega Drive)
  • Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf (Mega Drive)
  • Haunting Starring Polterguy (Mega Drive)
  • Jungle Strike (Mega Drive)
  • Mutant League Football (Mega Drive)
  • Road Rash (Mega Drive)
  • Road Rash II (Mega Drive)
  • Road Rash 3 (Mega Drive)
  • Syndicate (Super Nintendo)
  • Ultima VII: The Black Gate (Super Nintendo)
  • Virtual Pinball (Mega Drive)
  • Wing Commander (Super Nintendo)
  • Wing Commander: Secret Missions (Super Nintendo)

I believe the ROMs are included in \USRDIR\data\roms.viv and some kind of file can be extracted using viv-editor but they're unsuable. The files are smaller than expected and there is definitely no header so I think there's a further layer of compression on the files but it's not obvious what (other than they all start with the bytes C7 82).

I actually reached out to someone who had worked on this collection. The person was not able to provide any details on the internal formatting; along with being more managerial than hands on, they were still at EA and would be under NDA.

They did mention that funnily enough, for that collection, they did not have original files and had to get ahold of a ROM dumper and cartridges to get the games for the collection!

However, a more relevant issue is that Sony, at the time, would not allow the game to release on PSP with the original button callouts. Devs tediously had to hex-edit the ROMs to replace the button graphics. As such, it's entirely likely that they are modified in other ways - junk data and unused space removed, etc. A playable ROM might be possible, but it would be more work than expected and not the canonical version of those ROMs from the original carts.

That's really interesting. Thanks for that information.
