Distro independent .tgz packages

Right now, it looks like there are dedicated packages for windows, mac, but for linux there are only .deb packages. It would be very useful to have distro agnostic .tgz release packages as well.

I think we tried AppImage but ran into some issues (too slow to build?). There are other issues and this might be not a top priority right now. If you feel motivated, pull requests are welcome!
