Add more countries for digital freedom
Hello! I going make a list of more countries that can be added to your countries list:
- Sweden - a Nordic country part of the European Union that I live in and the biggest issue is the eGov/digital ID services, as most of them only BankID (other than Foreign eID) can be accessed through rather then OTP/SMS and physical authenticator methods or other option is to call thgrough their phone service and ask for Personnummer. Some services like Skateverket can select between BankID, Freja eID, AB Svensk Pass and Foreign eID, but no OTP and not many options for some privacy-minded people or groups that wants to avoid use of proprietary OSes and Big Tech services other than phone service. There's a proposed legislation that allows the police, law enforcement and intelligence services to mandate backdoor access to end-to-end-encrypted instant messengers like WhatsApp, Signal, iMessenge and Telegram and potential usage are for fight gang chrime and maybe CSAM.
- Mexico - a North American country which is not a G7 but a NAFTA country could be interesting be on the list. They wants to implement mandatory digital ID and age verification at the national level unlike US and Canada does
- New Zealand - a Polynesian country which is part of the Five Eyes (US, Canada, UK, Australia and of course New Zealand which is considered one of the least of the intelligence alliance). Not much known about the digital freedom but possibility the one of the freeest of all FE countries
- South Africa - a country part of BRICS (extension of BRIC to include South Africa). Despite some censorship practices, it seem to be far less censorship and restrictions compared to other BRICS countries
- Iran - a Middle Eastern country which is authoritarian or theocratic nation that's very interesting to research, they ban VPNs that aren't approved by government and you can get very high fines if you use unapproved VPNs, Tor and I2P. Like Russia and China, they blocking any Western social media sites and websites
- Other EU countries - impossible to detail these all EU membership countries but Hungary, Poland, Spain, Romania and Greece are maybe possible countries to research on their digital freedoms
- Argentina - a South American which is part of Mercosur, maybe interesting to see how digital freedom performs here
We can't list all countries here but maybe Nigeria, Thailand and South Korea about there but I don't know anything about it either.
Yes, that's a good choice of countries. Because of the effort to do proper research and the ongoing maintenance required I'm not too keen to add more countries myself, but I could imagine adding a country where the research was done by someone else. I've shifted the columns and rows so that the list of countries can be made longer and added some "how to contribute" bit on the webpage.
