Newline transformer number hack fails on Mac

The NewlineTransformer has a ts-ignore that says node ignores the encoding if it's a number. This is not the case on 22.7 on a Mac; it fails with an unknown encoding situation.

The error does not appear in Node 20 on the same Mac.
