⏳ ♿ Arrow Navigation not working for Carousels when Reduced Motion is Enabled in the OS Accessibility Settings

Description

Image Carousels are not working correctly in the latest version of Elementor (and any version after 3.32.5). Arrow navigations do not correctly scroll through images and autoplay does not work. I have tested on completely clean wordpress installs with no other plugins at all. Just Hello Elementor theme and Elementor. No Cache, local and web installs. The only way it works properly is to downgrade to version 3.32.5.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Edit a page in Elementor.
  2. Add the Image Carousel Widget.
  3. Add multiple images (at least 5 or 6 but the issue happens no matter how many images)
  4. Try to use the navigation arrows, autoplay settings, infinite loop, etc.

Expected behavior

Images should correctly scroll all the way through the entire gallery and loop around if Infinite scroll is enabled.

Just to clarify something, can you explain if you're just not seeing the animations, or if they are simply not working at all. Can you still paginate and switch slides even if the transitions and animations between each slide are not happening anymore?

If that's the case, this is not a bug, it's the intended behavior. Elementor now respects Reduced Motion settings, and will not play any animation or transition if these settings are defined in your Operating System's Accessibility settings. This is an Accessibility enhancement and we have no plans to change this behavior.

The Image Carousel is working fine for me on multiple sites, so I cannot reproduce the issue you're reporting.

Please clarify what you mean by "not working" and if you have the Reduced Motion Accessibility settings enabled in your OS.

I can confirm I am experiencing the same issues. Occurring on Desktop and Mobile. I can mouse drag images or press the dot navigation options to scroll, but the arrows no longer work.

Potentially related. At the same time, animation transition effects for all widgets are no longer working as expected.

I can confirm on my end that @nicholaszein is correct. If you have "Reduce Motion" enabled the navigation arrows don't work correctly.

@nicholaszein Is it possible to get a list of all widgets that are affected by the "Reduce Motion" being enabled?

Everything that moves, animates, or transitions. The entirety of Core and Pro widgets.

Thank you for the reply. After confirming in Windows 11 > Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects, Animation Effects was disabled. After enabling, the intended behavior is working again.

I did not change that on my PCs. I am wondering if a recent Windows Update had inadvertently turned it off. It was off for both my main PC and my laptop.

@Mal027 It's not uncommon (but not common either) to disable this feature to get a perceived "snappier" UI in your OS settings. If you're logged into the same Microsoft account on both machines, and have your settings and preferences synchronized, these will also port over to your other connected devices.

We are investigating this issue.

Strange because not only did I not turn Animation effects off, but I also didn't even know that setting existed. So it is definitely being turned on automatically by Windows without users knowing. (I am the only person that uses this PC or account).

I'd like to clarify that when it wasn't working, I still wasn't able to paginate through the entire carousel. Swiping animations or not, when clicking an arrow it would not change the images at all. It was like it was just stuck on the first "page" of images.

So pagination dots seem to work, but not navigation arrows?

I cannot reproduce this issue on my end. For us, with animations turned on, everything works.

@chrisdogtn, @Mal027, @mcrowell it would help us a lot if you could share your Elementor System Info as well, this way we can compare your setup and see if there is anything in common that could contribute to the problem.

Hi guys,

Let me make this clear: we are not looking for someone to blame. If you had that option enabled without knowing, that's completely fine. This can happen on Windows if the device doesn't have enough power to handle transparency effects and animations. That's really ok. As I also said, it can be synchronized with/from other devices too. That's completely OK too. This is normal.

Just keep in mind, these settings affect any animation, transition, and motion effect in Elementor because Elementor now respects the device's Reduced Motion preferences ok? This is how it's going to be going forward. It's a much required and requested accessibility enhancement that Elementor is more than happy and proud to finally be implementing. We are moving forward to a better future.

If you ever find yourself in the situation where none of your animations appear to be working, don't panic, just make sure to check if this option is enabled in your device's Accessibility settings or not. All major Operating Systems have a similar option, including iOS and Android.

What we are trying to figure out is why for you, switching slides using the navigation Arrows is not working. This is our goal here.

We want to find common denominators, if it affects other Swiper-based elements such as other Carousels and sliders, and if the server/site configurations, cache, and plugins have any influence in the final result.

The more information you can share, the better. We are grateful for the help.

@nicholaszein Thanks. For me, I can use the arrows exactly one time before it breaks and they no longer work at all. Meaning I can click an arrow once, the images slide, but then nothing works after that. No arrows left or right. No dots. It is effectively then frozen and will not move or change. When on autoplay, it never moves at all no matter what. I shared my Elementor system info in my original post but here it is again:

Here's the problem though... I have "Animation effects" disabled on my Windows 11 system, because I don't like a lot of the new animations that the OS introduced. But I do want to see the animation transitions on my own website.

So I think you need to make a way for the user to choose whether reduced motion is enforced or not on an Elementor website. If you want to default it to where you have it now, fine. But at least provide a toggle somewhere that gives users the option to force animations/transitions to always play.
