Sidebar is slow to expand folders containing moderately many (2000) files first time

What Happened?

Expanding a folder containing 2000 small files (not text) was very slow (20 - 30 seconds)

Steps to Reproduce

1. Open a project containing a folder with thousands of files
2. Click on the folder to expand it
3. Wait ... wait ... wait
4. The folder eventually expands
5. Closing and reopening the folder is relatively quick

Expected Behavior

Expanding a folder containing lots of files should be reasonably fast (and/or give user feedback) and not block the interface.
