Issue developing on macOS because of `COPYRIGHT` file and `copyright` folder

macOS by default uses a case insensitive filesystem, which leaves git (and the OS) confused regarding the state of the COPYRIGHT file and the copyright folder.

I suggest renaming the COPYRIGHT file to COPYRIGHT.md or moving the copyright folder/pkg into a subpackage, in order of preference.
