POM packaging on Maven Central

The published pom.xml on Maven Central for j2v8 from versions 3.x through 5.0.103 all have this declaration:

…
  <packaging>aar.asc</packaging>
…

I expected the packaging value to be aar, considering build.gradle declares packaging 'aar'.

Is there some reason why packaging is aar.asc instead in the published pom.xml?
