RMSDK e-inks crash when used with opacity text

this one only seems to occur with a lot of use of the opacity style. I have a chapter that has 20+ spans, each with a different opacity all in a row. RMSDK e-inks (like the Kobo and Nook brands) will start to render the text but very quickly display no text or crash altogether.
