Internationalise Fusion

Open dphfox opened this issue 4 years ago • 4 comments

Recently we got a great internationalisation PR #62 which aimed to localise our documentation for Spanish users. I'm already fully on board with these efforts, hence why this issue has skipped evaluating status, but it's not something I'm currently looking to pursue further until the docs are much more solid and not prone to large, sweeping changes.

More generally though, it could be a great idea to have a more holistic internationalisation effort across the entire Fusion project - for example, by introducing localised error messages. If there's any areas of Fusion where you think something more could be done to support your locale, mention it here and I'll make sure it gets accounted for once we start getting to stable releases of Fusion :)

Sounds great! I would be onboard for any German translations.

But maybe you want to look into a tool like Crowdin for automatic implementation.

Noting here that localised error messages are off the table - doing some research, .NET has this already, but it's generally not liked for a few reasons:

  • it's harder to google these messages (though Fusion has error message IDs so this is a bit less of an issue)
  • it's harder for non-native speakers of that language to parse out useful info from the error e.g. variable names
  • translations could be prone to writing issues e.g. someone using an automatic translator to get crude error messages

There's not usually much benefit to them either, given the vast majority of developers have some level of English literacy. Though it may not be much fluency, we try to keep our language relatively accessible anyway, so this shouldn't be a concern.

I can definitely contribute with Portuguese BR.

I can help with zh-tw/cn/hk translations.

There does not seem to be much appetite for internationalisation at the moment, so for the time being I'll close this.
