Sorry for the late reply here, I concluded my review with comments listed above in the `gratia` repo. Once those are resolved, I'm happy with the package!
You might also want to look at how Gavin deals with this in his [`gratia`](https://gavinsimpson.github.io/gratia/) package, as there may be some re-usable code there.
