Report failures setting an exit status

Propagate exit status from gem install when some gem or gems can't be installed. This allows scripts to be able to respond accordingly.

@cyx - bump.

Please consider merging this one (and pushing a release) - the current behaviour really endangers our automated build pipeline. Without this, a surrounding script has no way to know if the gem installation failed.
