All My Workflows and Models Were Deleted During an Update—What Happened?

Open ooi777 opened this issue 3 months ago • 18 comments

Custom Node Testing

Expected Behavior

I need some time alone.

Actual Behavior

My C: drive and D: drive storage has been fluctuating wildly. I checked the Task Manager and found a very long-named ComfyUI process constantly engaging the disk. The disk usage was jumping between 100% on C: drive and 100% on D: drive.

After the process finally ended, I noticed that my C: and D: drives, which previously each had only about 100GB of free space, now both had around 500GB remaining. I was happy for a moment until I felt something was wrong.

I opened my model folders and found that all the models on both C: drive and D: drive (which were linked via directory junctions/symlinks) were gone. My workflows are also missing.

Did someone submit a virus or malicious code to ComfyUI?

That just happened to me today too! I lost all my models after the update!

Any other details or possible clues you can share? I have never heard of this issue before.

Are you using the desktop application?

Any other details or possible clues you can share? I have never heard of this issue before.

Are you using the desktop application? It's the desktop version. I hadn't updated it for several days, so yesterday I turned on the automatic update. I then noticed a process with a very long name, which had your (ComfyUI's) icon, running in the Task Manager. The disk usage was extremely high, around 900 MB/s, causing the C drive to hit 100% usage for a while, and then the D drive to hit 100% usage for a while. I estimate this lasted for at least 30 minutes.

I observed the disk space fluctuating, constantly growing and shrinking, which looked like data transfer. Some of my models are stored on the D drive, linked to the C drive (so they don't take up space on C directly). This means both drives had a lot of models. When the disk space kept changing and the C drive was close to full, I moved several very large models to another directory on the D drive, leaving only the other large models in place.

After a long time—I'm not sure how long, but definitely more than 30 minutes—the high disk usage stopped. After the files were deleted, the ComfyUI shortcut I had created earlier prompted that it was invalid when I double-clicked it. I then launched the program, and it automatically opened my previous workflow, but the workflow file itself was gone. It automatically prompted that nodes were missing, and when I tried to install the missing nodes, it said they already existed. I was only able to get it working by deleting all nodes and reinstalling them, but when I was deleting the nodes, I found that only a few of them were still present.

When I opened PyCharm to install a specific version of torch for ComfyUI, I found that pip3 was gone. Anyway, the installation was basically like new—my previous folders were there, but the files inside them were gone. For example, the Jan-prefix control net plugin still had its model directory, but the files were missing. The same thing happened in the output directory.

Just had this as well. Worst part is that many of the files deleted were models I'd trained myself. This is a pretty catastrophic bug. Strangely only loras and workflows were deleted, the checkpoints haven't been touched. The python environment was broken in the update and settings and configuration got blasted

Your images and model are probably still there! I had the same problem today and thought I lose everything, but finally...not.

Go to: C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\nsh61D4.tmp(OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT)\old-install\models

It look like everything was copied somewhere else (but not deleted) during the update (which was in fact broken...)

Thanks for the attempt, but there's nothing there for me. Why on earth it would interact with folders outside the installation is beyond me. The models weren't even in comfyui. Maybe I left a symlink in there?

Yep seeing this too. Models, workflows and even the output folder all gone.

I had the exact same problem today !!! So anoying ! Hopefully my compagny has an automatic save of all our pc... However, after the update, comfyui told me and error regarding python package....

I've been wiped out again! FUCK! This is an incredibly frustrating and catastrophic recurrence of severe data loss.

I was downloading a model and, at the same time, I went to check if my latest image generation had finished. I noticed that clicking the top navigation tab failed to switch contexts。

I quickly started to zip my output directory. but shortly after that, I checked the folders and confirmed my worst fears: the files had been deleted.

Specifically, all my model files were deleted yet again, and the contents of the entire models folder and the entire output folder within my ComfyUI directory were wiped clean. The directories themselves remain, but all the files inside are gone.

Crucial Context: When I started ComfyUI, I saw the update prompt, and I immediately thought I should disable the automatic updates but I forgot to do it. I strongly suspect this automatic process (potentially an update or a dependency check) is the direct cause of this destructive deletion.

Ok.... They forced another update and this time they deleted all my models, images and workflows... How can I use Comfy again if they delete the user's stuff. It's not safe... but I don't have choice. I'm really frustrated... thousend hours of work and 40GB lost without reason... And that infinite loading time + deleted python package...

There is no word to describe my actual mood now... Everything is gone except folders... Just WHY... is there an instruction to delete all those personnal files?

I'm baffled, how did you guys, who get this "forced update" + delete, install ComfyUI? I myself simply git cloned ComfyUI repository in a folder. If and when I want to update it to latest code I just do a git pull inside that folder. I have never encountered such a disaster, I don't even comprehend how it is possible.

I used the installer then installed the auto-updates, because I had problem with python when cloning the repo.

Comfy was good and efficient... But I don't know what to do now, I'm effraid and stuck with my work because that issue will probably happen again.

Aetherium1947 avatar Oct 29 '25 23:10 Aetherium1947

that happened to me too. comfyui isn't safe

using portable installation and setting "use system packages" to false and use pip instead of UV might solve this issue, I'd also suggest storing comfyui in another drive instead of drive used by the system (which is mostly C:\ ) can sometimes prevent privileges conflicts.

same issue ;_;

Similar thing happened to me. I was using the executable (not portable) version. A week ago attempted a standard update using comfyUI manger; it failed, tried again it failed. Unfortunately I didn't document my steps and it was a week ago. I think I then tried to use "Update: (specific version)" to force roll the update. The whole thing kludged, I think a restart gave me the option to reinstall python, so I tried that, I think it hung and I finally closed it after several hours. I decided  I was going to give portable a try. I installed it yesterday. I was just going to move workflows and files today, and noticed they are all wiped. all directories are empty, including all my outputs. Lesson learned, do a backup  if the update fails before trying anything else. I suspect it might be the install python packages, as shown above that wiped the folders. I got the same option.

This is the 2nd time it's happened to me as well. Seems to be after doing an update and needing to be killed off because it freezes up. As mentioned about I did manage to find my input\ folder contents in.

C:\Users<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp\nsl6616.tmp\old-install\input

But no luck for output\ and workflow\ contents.

BTW I just used the comfyUI desktop installer .exe to install.

Hundreds of hours of work gone, this problem need top priority!
