Would like a different icon marker when in "only" vs. dynamic
By looking at the icon in the menubar, I should be able to tell whether I am in dynamic mode or "only" mode.
I was just thinking the same thing.
Since you can force the high performance GPU in OSX, I am guessing many of use use GFX status to do the opposite - force the built in Intel GPU - right now that displays an i in the menu bar - it would be cool if it could display a tiny 'o' to the bottom right of the i (about 1/4 size the font the i is in) - it could be very small and subtle, but it would remind us we're in "only" mode when we hook up our external display and wonder why it's not working!
Another possible way of solving this and sticking with the 1 letter design, is to use a lower d for dynamic and an upper D for discrete graphics. So the lower 'i' can be kept for integrated graphics.
Anybody know what the font for the 'd' and 'i' are? I think adding a small lock to the icon would be fairly easy and noticeable.
Bold and italic Georgia.
The icons are currently just text, not images, so using images would involve maintaining 1x and 2x versions of every possible icon state, which would be much more annoying comparatively.

So the png's in the Images folder are a red herring?
Yep. They haven't been used for several releases.
