wsdd has been removed from Debian repos
wsdd can not be installed directly in Debian 13 (Trixie) because the package has been removed. It is only available in Sid. Any idea why?
Any chance to get them from here, PPA or OBS?
I only find Debian bug 1100767 which indicates an issue during making the package ready for Trixie. I am not involved in the Debian packaging, but maybe @grantma can provide more details.
It installs fine from the sid repository in trixie. It's only an issue when you do an upgrade from Deb12 since there are now two wsdd packages: wsdd-server which does what the old wsdd package in Deb12 did and a new and improved wsdd package itself which is used by gvfs ( gvfsd-wsdd ) to discover Windows boxes in the file manager.
In an upgrade situation you would have two wsdd packages that did two different things. So you would have to remove the old before adding the new.
The developer / packager fixed it but it was too late for inclusion in trixie. Maybe someday it will be in trixie/backports or maybe trixie/proposed?
It's really a shame.
Mh. Too bad. 😐
Can anyone clarify what would be the impact on Ubuntu?
There is an issue there as well: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wsdd
We could take the change and fix the issue in the merge but then if Debian fixes it differently it might complicate things. Better to just delay the change, try to land a fix in Debian and then bring it over to Ubuntu.
So the issue would pass on to Mint and all the the Ubuntu derivatives.
Mh. Too bad. I'll try to contact @grantma if he's not replying here within the next days.
Hi Christgau!
What exactly is gongon with this? Im running 0.8 fine on bookworm, and it should be in trixie as I fixed the conffile issue, but it never made its way back in. I was busy shifting house at the time for a couple of months, and didn't follow it up after doing the patch as usual as I had important things to get done...
Cheers,
Matt

@grantma As you can see here, the wsdd-server package for example is only available in Sid. It is not listed for any other release; this implies it is not available in Trixie.

Totally understandable. We (at least me) are just wondering what is going on.
As @votdev states the package is not available by default. pkgs.org also indicates this for Trixie.
However, I noticed that "wsdd migrated to testing" which is good news.
Are there any chances to still get into Trixie or do we have to wait for the next Debian release?
Hi,
If it's a major functionality issue, we may be able to get it included in the next point release, but at the least we should be able to get it into trixie-backports.
Please give me a couple of weeks.
Regards,
Matt

One could argue that there is integration of wsdd in Gnome which allows to see discover Windows hosts and other hosts running wsdd. That is now missing without the wsdd package.
but at the least we should be able to get it into trixie-backports.
Less favorable, but in principle also ok.

Sure.
If you need support or additional arguments, just let us know (here)
Thanks for your efforts anyways.
Thx
What is the wsdd2 service in released Trixie?
What is the
wsdd2service in released Trixie?
That's another implementation of the WSD server side. No client side implementation, though.
