FEMM manual using pdfLaTeX
I would like to use FEMM in a course on electromagnetics. The manaul is good. However, it still uses pslatex. I also used it 20 years ago. The pdf-format ist much easier. So I did the minimum to just update the figures:
- specify the path in the main tex-document.
- Created subdirectories for figures and content.
- Converted figures to png, pdf or jpg.
Perhaps in future I can translate parts to German.
hi! thanks for your PR two things:
- can you please merge with master?
- i see you have removed all the references in ".tex.in" input files about "@CMAKE_CURRENT_SOURCE_DIR@". It seems that for them being input files for cmake is not even necessary, because there's no variable to be substituted before being fed into the latex compiler. But I remember this step was necessary for portability on some systems. Open question (i don't remember the problem it was fixing back in the time): was it due to a postscript/dvi problem or is it something we should still consider?
The pslatex package and the [dvi] option are not necessary anymore. %\usepackage{pslatex} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{hyperref}
Furthermore, by using graphicspath the need for the cmake option is not necessary as well. \graphicspath{{figs/}} % Add more directories if needed, separated by commas

i merged with master for you
Stefano, I only use git in a rather straightforward way. This is my first PR, so I do not know the next steps. I am not so clear what the next steps are. Can you briefly explain me what to do?
i need to review the manual, the rendering quality, etc. For you it's over, at least for now. In case there is need to review anything, I'll let you know. In case it's good to go, I will merge the PR
So, i have a question for you just looking at the list of files: why some are converted to jpg, others to png and a new script looks like it has been used to convert everything to pdf?
I wanted to provide some context regarding the varied file formats you may have noticed in the recent commit. The reason behind the mix of jpg, png, and pdf files is as follows:
Initially, I converted ps and eps files to pdf. However, some images lacked a boundary for automatic cropping. To address this, I used an automated function in Acrobat-Reader to export these pictures as png. For the few cases where this automated process failed, manual intervention was required, and jpg was the only offered option.
The choice to convert everything to pdf using a new script was driven by the ease of updating to pdfLaTeX. Screenshotting was an alternative, but it proved less efficient. Looking ahead, there's consideration for leveraging TikZ in the future to enhance graphics quality, but this is a project for the long term.
I want to emphasize my commitment to contributing to FEMM rather than creating a new fork. Your understanding and feedback are always appreciated.
Looking forward to the ongoing collaboration and improvements!
