I have managed to hack my way into getting visual editor working. Will update once all functionality is sorted out.

The solution was achieved by implementing the following changes:

1. LocalSettings.php Add the following code to the end of LocaSettings.php

$wgVisualEditorSupportedSkins = [
                        "vector",
                        "apex",
                        "monobook",
                        "minerva",
                        "blueprint",
                        "bootstrapmediawiki"
                ];

2. BootstrapMediaWiki.skin.php Replace line 230 with the following:

 <div class="body" >
as 
 <div class="body" id="content">

Replace line 444 with the following:

case 'Edit': $icon = 'pencil'; break; 
as 
case 'Edit': $icon = 'pencil'; $id='ca-ve-edit'; break;

replace line 453 with the following:

$link['title'] = '<i class="fa fa-' . $icon .'" ></i> ' . $link['title'];
as
$link['title'] = '<i class="fa fa-' . $icon .'" id="' . $id .'" ></i> ' . $link['title'];

I know it's rough, hope this helps though
