More accurate button label for leaving edit mode

Open flack opened this issue 13 years ago • 8 comments

ATM, if you're in edit mode, you have to click on "Cancel" to leave it, which is a bit confusing, because after clicking Save, you have to click Cancel, which might lead people to beleive that their edit wil be reverted. So from a usability point of view, it would be better to change the button label to "Exit" or something similar if there are no unsaved changes

Any suggestions on the label to use? Exit seems a bit strong word.

Well, if you find Exit too strong, you won't like Quit either...

the only option I can think of right now would be longer terms, like "Leave (or Close) Edit Mode". Maybe Close would work standalone, too, someone would have to do a user study I guess :-)

The Cancel button could also seen in relation to Save. In this sense, when you have unsaved changes, leaving edit mode is indeed Cancel. But if you don't have unsaved changes, maybe it should just be Leave. Though I'm not sure if I like the idea that it changes labels

Well, yeah, changing labels might be weird (but OTOH, the other label already changes from "Save" to "Saving"), but like I said, my original concern is that a user saves something and then is afraid to click Cancel because he thinks it will actually revert his changes. Or the other way around: Someone saves all the time, because he expects that he can still undo by clicking "Cancel".

Maybe the cleanest solution would be to have separate buttons: One for resetting to the latest saved state and another one for leaving the edit mode, but that's of course your call

I'm still unsure about the right solution, but at least #48 makes it easy to tune the wording.

So currently we have the following states:

  1. Edit
  2. Save (inactive), Cancel (active)
  3. Save (active), Cancel (active)

I would prefer that in the case of 2) the "Cancel" button would be labeled something else .. as "Exit" and "Quit" indeed might indicate closing the page, how about "Done"?

@lsmith77 the Done and Cancel combo sounds pretty good. @flack what do you think?

bergie avatar Oct 12 '12 11:10 bergie

Why not. Sounds better than "Cancel" in this situation :-)
