Error Identification
My wife came across this error while doing research and asked if I knew what it was. To be honest I'm a bit confounded! There's lines across the frame that switch position, which could either by a dirty head drum or a creased tape, but I feel like poor transport alignment is the culprit here. Any ideas?

If we're unable to identify this error completely I think it still may be worthwhile to include in the AVAA with some thoughts. I think it's extremely cool to see the entire sync tip coming into the frame!
Wow this thing's a mess, great find! And also: have no idea, wish I did.
Oohh.... I think there's a lot going on there. At first, I thought there might have been a problem with a production switcher because the image breaks up every time the shot changes. That can happen with a matrix switcher that has an unstable reference input. But I don't think it happens consistently. It looks like the head switch is floating, too. I have seen that in mistimed analog video signals, but it could also be the result of a transport alignment problem. It could be compounded problems. I think that big horizontal shift is an example of mis-triggering, where you can see leading/trailing edge of active video and the horizontal blanking interval. I have some TBCs that produce this type of artifact with certain kinds of tape damage, but I don't think that's the case with this clip. Perhaps there 's an old-timer who could weigh in?
