BLIVE: Use Mural Board to increase engagement and participation
I created a Mural Board as a bit of an experiment for Backdrop LIVE. See: http://bit.ly/3bgR3ye
I asked for and got some excellent feedback in Zulip and am opening this issue to respond to that feedback and as a place for additional discussion or suggestions.
So far, the feedback I've gotten amounts to (I am paraphrasing):
- What is the purpose of this Mural Board? What is it's intended role in Backdrop LIVE?
- This is different, unintuitive, and difficult to use.
I have written a longer blog post to highlight the goals for using a tool like Mural in this blog post:

I welcome feedback and discussion here.
I'm also working on a shorter blog post that is a quick introduction on how to use Mural.
NOTE: This is all pretty new to me as well. This is the first time I've really used this tool.
Thanks, Tim! I checked out the Mural you set up and while I was confused by it at first, after zooming out I was able to figure out how to move around and add things pretty quickly. It feels like a neat, interactive element that adds a tangible element to our virtual event and gives people another way to engage. We'll need to moderate the space, of course, as with all of the spaces we create for our community, but as long as there's enough capacity to do that, I like the idea of using this Mural for the event.
I'll try to keep an eye on the Mural this week and especially on Friday!
Backdrop LIVE is over. In my view, the results of the Mural experiment were mixed.
I think that it was marginally successful as a place for folks to start engaging with the event prior to the start of the event.
I don't think it was useful at all during the event.
I think that it could be more useful both before, during and after the event - with more thought and structure. But, that if we are going to continue to use a Mural board it should be with planning and even clearer intentions of what role it is playing and how we will facilitate participation.
My first goal for the Mural board was as some kind of collective note taking tool. But as the event approached, as I experimented with the board, and during the event itself - it became clear that something like Google Docs is much more appropriate and easy to use - especially at this time.
I will continue to think about how to use a Mural Board at future events, but I expect we would modify how we use it based upon what we learned this time around.
Thoughts on this now @stpaultim?
