Any way to use email besides gmail in local_settings?

I'm trying to use sendgrid, but sendgrid doesnt provide a DEFAULT_FROM_EMAIL, and I would like signup emails to come from my own domain. Does this option only work with gmail or is there a way to integrate with some other provider?
