[BUG] High Keystroke Latency / Excessive data being sent/logged on keystrokes

Open temrb opened this issue 4 months ago β€’ 23 comments

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

I'm experiencing lots of input latency where typing has become extremely slow.

After investigating network traffic, it appears CC is transmitting HIGH volume of data on every individual keystroke + when I'm not typing (passive)... which is causing the editor to feel very unresponsive.

This performance issue only occurs when CC is active.

Is there a setting to disable this keystroke-level data transmission or otherwise mitigate its impact on performance?

Please, implement a feature to disable keystroke level telemetry completly.

What Should Happen?

Give option to opt out of telemetry completly.

If true, 0 logs / data / etc should be sent on key strokes.

Error Messages/Logs

  1. Using tcpdump or something, start capture terminal logs
  2. Start Claude Code in terminal
  3. (start typing) latency)
  4. see lots of push flags on type. as well as when not typing.

I'm getting this too. Recently typing has become incredibly laggy. I tried deleting previous chat history in the .claude/projects folder but it is still laggy. I can type in a terminal window just fine, but as soon as Claude Code loads, it becomes incredibly laggy and slow. Persists after close, restarts, in VSCode or in a standalone terminal. Can't figure out what it is, but it just started about 24 hours ago!

Same issue here: typing in Claude Code on PowerShell is very laggy and sometimes characters don’t show up. Really frustrating.

Same here

Same problem here. I checked with my community and I am the only one having this problem. I am using CC via AWS Bedrock. Are you guys using it like this as well?

I just started having the same issue. I have tested in multiple projects, in the terminal and in cursor. I have restarted my machine and closed out all other applications. My memory is only at 31% usage cpu at 2% internet speed at 90mbps. I am running on my local windows machine. Was working fine until about 30 minutes ago.

Same here. Only 50% of the characters I type actually make it into the CC text input. As if typing in CC wasn't already a pain without this issue.

Same here, problems just started

curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash -s 1.0.113

Downgrading to 113 solved it for me

armanckeser avatar Sep 16 '25 15:09 armanckeser

Can confirm that downgrading to 113 also solved the issue for me on windows.

dunnston avatar Sep 16 '25 15:09 dunnston

Also confirm downgrade to 1.0.113 solved the issue for me.

I noticed the latest version of CC dynamically detects and styles your prompt to highlight the work think as you're typing it. I wonder if this additional real-time parsing is causing a peformance issue:

Same here. Super painful. 1.0.113 worked for me, but just for a brief second before it auto-updated to 1.0.115 again

Sure the colors are pretty, but the delay and eating of letters (I can literally see them blinking in the prompt, only to be removed shortly after) is unbearable.

Guess I better disable auto-updates for now.

Update: 1.0.117 seems to work without without gobbling up my keystrokes

Chalk up another frustrated users. Mac, Windows, Bash, Terminal, PowerShell. Doesn't matter, same issue. SLOW AF!!!! The lagginess is really cramping my style and making it really hard to get work dont and communicate with my agent.

Issue was fixed in https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/commit/9e13ea7680ecfc0640cd23fdf3610dd42832418a 1.0.117. Works fine across all my enviornments now.

claude --version 1.0.120 (Claude Code)

Im still dead in the water...

So i found the cause of my problem and its super weird. Since Im on wsl this might be a bit unique.

But if powershell.exe is in the PATH, then I encounter massive slowness in the text editing. Im not sure what is happending inside of the claude, but this can cause serious issues on wsl.

You helped me found my issue, which I think is related. I'm also on WSL, so I removed all the /mnt/* entries from my $PATH and this made the lagging disappear entirely! I think the slowness is probably because CC is doing some file system operations to paths in the $PATH and the wsl -> windows file system integration is a lot slower than native wsl.

This might be the problem for others as well -- that you have entries in your path that are simply on slow to access.

I had the same issue on WSL. You can prevent that the Windows $PATH is automatically added to the WSL $PATH by adding the following to /etc/wsl.conf:

[interop]
appendWindowsPath=false

This is a workaround for me, but feels like treating the symptom. I preferred Claude Code not doing intense file system operations to anything in my $PATH variable, even if just to get an idea of what binaries are available.

I never had this problem before but since 2.1.09 and now 2.1.11 I have it.
