Find a way to back up my Pinboard bookmarks without relying on Pinboard's archiving service
I pay for Pinboard's archiving service, but I have an uncertain level of trust:
- Nothing I've saved in the last 4 weeks has been archived
- When I try to look at an archived page right now, I get an error "The service is not available. Please try again later."
- It sometimes gets interstitial pages rather than the actual page
I want to have an independent archive of my bookmarks, so I can still get to saved pages if Pinboard is unavailable.
I'm having a play with https://github.com/newzealandpaul/webarchiver, which looks promising – it automates Safari to save web archives.
Among other things, this would make it easy for me to replace a page with a known-good archive if I discover something funky.
I’ve got this working with a new tool to create Safari webarchive files on the command-line: see https://alexwlchan.net/2024/creating-a-safari-webarchive/
I’ve also been having some timeout issues with the API but the website is still working.
I’ve temporarily increased the frequency of my recurring “do a Pinboard backup” task until things settle down a bit.
Closing as stale; I no longer use Pinboard to save my bookmarks.
