How should placeholders be used while loading async functions?

The docs seem to hint that there is some sort of placeholder feature for async functions, but there doesn't seem to be an example provided in the docs, and I'm not seeing the term placeholder in the code either.

Would you mind pointing me to how it's supposed to work or if it's no longer implemented?
